Almost 70 and Tony Allen, senior drummer from Nigeria, has finally found in this last decade the recognition he deserved. He was part of “the Good, the Bad and the Queen” together with Damon Albarn from Blur and ex-The Clash Paul Simonon. He recorded with Sébastien Tellier, Air or Charlotte Gainsbourg. The gurus of world music never get tired of stating that, if it was not for Tony Allen, Afro-beat would not exist. They are certainly right about it, Allen being the one who brought the “beat” whilst his late boss, Fela Kuti, produced the “Afro”. And in his new album, “Secret Agent”, Tony Allen breaks one of the sacrosanct rules of afro-beat giving the songs an almost pop format (4 or 5 minutes) instead of the ten of fifteen minutes peculiar to the genre. In this excellent album, songs are sung by Allen himself and by the wonderful Orobiyi Adunni (aka Ayo, singer-songwriter who released the magnificent album “Joyful”).[António Pires - Raízes e Antenas]
